DOMEN KANDUTI

Domen Kanduti is a young dentist currently working as a dental intern and a first-year Ph.D. student at Medical Faculty at the University of Ljubljana. The possibility to participate in ASEF fellowship program would give him an opportunity for exceptional additional education and research work in collaboration with Assoc. Prof. Janina Golob Deeb DMD, Ph.D. and her team at Virginia Commonwealth University. During his undergraduate studies at Medical Faculty in Ljubljana, he dedicated some of his time to research. He was a co-author of a few scientific publications in the field of public health and cooperated in a research project in prosthodontics. He was very active in faculty and European student associations and a leader of student preventive project. He attended different workshops and international congresses. All these experiences opened his mind to different aspects of dentistry, international opportunities and made him even more motivated for the chosen profession.

Despite all the work and thoughts about Dentistry he enjoys being in nature and does outdoor sports like hiking, skiing in winter, running and road cycling. It is probably the reason he developed a passion for landscape photography as well. His biggest passion and hobby is painting. Even though some people think that science and art don’t always go hand by hand, he thinks dentistry is a perfect combination of both and he looks forward to expressing himself.

NEJC KOSANIČ

I am a physics student from Maribor, Slovenia. I finished my Bachelor's degree of Physics at the University of Maribor and am currently enrolled in Master of Science in Physics programme at University of Ljubljana. For the past two years I have been at Nuclear Reactor Center of Institut Jožef Stefan, where I was setting up an experiment on hydrodynamics (exploring critical heat flux and two phase flow behaviour of coolant R-134a under various conditions). I have also been working in a different IJS departement for two months, where I worked on plasma production (examining synthesis of NH3 from H2 and N2 plasma in a low-pressure chamber on different metalsurfaces).

My true interest lies in Astrophysics, which I had the chance to study on an Erasmus exchange at the University of Zagreb. I have always been interested in the nature of stars and galaxies. As such, my main goal in applying to ASEF is to be able to learn numerical programing, data mining, and to participate in an astrophysical research, which will be possible under the supervision of prof. Andrej Prša at Villanova.

In my free time I have teamed up with a friend of mine to create a portable beverage cooler, but due to thermodynamics being in a slight disagreement with our project, it didn’t work out. We have also used the technology on two subsequent “successful” projects. Apart from that, I am also a lead (read: only) guitar player in a superb funky pop party band, a chile (plant and sauce!) enthusiast and happy craft beverages endorser.

SLOVENIAN

Juš is a graduate student of Mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, University of Ljubljana. Rada teče, pleše in hodi v gore.

JANA OBŠTETER

Jana Obšteter is currently working at the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia and doing a PhD at the Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana. She obtained her BSc in Biotechnology from the University of Ljubljana and her MSc in Quantitative Genetics and Genome Analysis from the University of Edinburgh. While her previous work focused on human genetics, her current research interests are in application of quantitative genetics technologies to animal breeding. In her PhD thesis she is exploring how to efficiently use genomic information to maximise the genetic gain for minimum investment in cattle breeding. This is of particular importance for small countries, such as Slovenia and many other countries in the developing world, where investment in the genomic data is severely limited, but genetic improvement is badly needed to feed the ever increasing number of people with dwindling resources.

Jana is going to work with prof. Gregor Gorjanc at the University of Edinburgh. She is excited to upgrade her PhD research while working with world-leading researchers for animal research. When not working, Jana enjoys singing and spending time outdoors – either running, hiking or simply discovering nature.

Jana bo v okviru ASEF-a obiskala prof.

Poleg raziskovanja Jana uživa v petju in preživljanju časa v naravi – predvsem v teku, planinarjenju ali zgolj odkrivanju skritih kotičkov narave.
